Library Book Talk Series – A Conversation with John Burt

All are welcome to attend the next in the Brandeis Library’s Book Talk Series, this time featuring John Burt for a talk about his new novel, A Moment’s Surrender.

A Moment’s Surrender follows freshman writing instructor Paul Bishop in the aftermath of the murder of his former best friend, the renowned poet Tom Corbin. Haunted by guilt and bound by a devastating secret, Paul takes it upon himself to care for Tom’s terminally ill widow, Susan. But the truth he withholds — that Tom had planned to leave Susan for another woman, Paul’s own long-ago lover Rachel Lake — draws Paul into a painful triangle of loyalty, betrayal, and unresolved desire. Caught between the two women, Paul must navigate a web of grief and deception that threatens to undo them all.”

The Brandeis Library Book Talk Series provides a platform for Brandeis authors to showcase their recent book publications, to engage with the community, share insights from their work, and discuss its impact.

We hope to see you there, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in the Gardner Jackson room, or over Zoom (Click here for Zoom link)!

If you’re interested in participating in a future book talk, please reach out to Matthew Sheehy, University Librarian. We look forward to celebrating and amplifying the work of our faculty authors! Date:Wednesday, March 18, 2026Time:3:30pm – 5:00pmTime Zone:Eastern Time – US & Canada (change)Location:Gardner Jackson, Mezzanine level of Goldfarb LibraryOnline:This is an online event.Event URL:https://brandeis.zoom.us/j/99305344887

    Hi John,

And thanks for the heads up on this event. I am glad there is a Zoom link: I will certainly be there!

Life in Rome is good, mostly. My Italian is making progress, but much more slowly than my fellow students, who are mostly in their 20s. There is always much to see and do. I was at the Keats/Shelley house a few days ago. It is right by the famous Spanish Steps and is now surrounded by upscale fashion stores. Dolce Gabbana and that kind of thing. Still, it is moving to see the place the two poets lived (and died).

For that matter, it turns out my own little apartment is about a block from the rooms Goethe took when he lived in Rome. That, too, is a sort of museum you can visit. And about five minutes away is a church with two Caravaggio paintings in it. You can just walk in anytime you want. For museums, though, you have to get timed entry tickets online. It is not like it was back in the 1970s, the last time I was here before. Tourism is now massive….

    See you soon!
